Big Red Lobster (2013)

In her museum room, Tamara Van San integrates her 2012 sculpture Big Red Lobster . Several bright red lacquered, shield-shaped metal elements of varying diameter are seemingly randomly connected to each other. They carry each other so that the resulting sculpture seems to have a life of its own in the space. The circular shape refers to the infinite. Moreover, Van San assumes that the purity of geometric forms allows the viewer to look more freely. When that shape is repeated, it creates a rhythm on which associations can be linked into a story or meaning. Small deviations, such as here the unevenness of the material surface and the burrs around the welds, stand out and demand more attention. And also the color, misleading or just barely, claims that attention and the viewer's wonder: does a big red lobster appear here - or not?
