Tamara Van San studied Sculpture at Sint Lucas in Antwerp. In her sculptures, she looks for formal solutions that, despite their non-figurative design, leave the possibility of recognition open. Van San works on both large and small formats in everyday materials, in recent years often in clay glazed with bright colours. This working method also characterises her ceramic tower sculptures based on Chinese gongshi, jagged rocks that naturally occur or have been shaped by natural elements and that are valued in Chinese tradition for the associations they evoke. Van San takes a casual approach to form, colour and matter. Through the tension between organic and geometric forms and through the positioning of works both in space and in relation to each other, she aims to appeal to the viewer’s capacity for wonder. In doing so she also invites us to link meanings and stories to the work.
