A playful deception for the eye. That's how Ann Veronica Janssens' museum room could be described. What at first glance appears to be a relief and thus three-dimensional, can be unmasked as a two-dimensional installation after analyzing the image. As often in Janssens' oeuvre, the disorienting viewing experience is an invitation to the viewer to reflect on his or her perception. Janssens' Rotoreliëf triggers memories of Anémic Cinéma, Marcel Duchamp's iconic 1926 surrealist film in which the artist created an optical illusion by sequentially mounting a succession of static camera images of circular drawings.
