In Intersections and the Arbitrary, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven deviates somewhat from her signature flashy use of color. In terms of aesthetics, with this collage of black-and-white women's photographs, she seeks rather a connection to twentieth-century modernism. The recurring image of the same woman is each time accompanied by a number and a somewhat stereotypical description: from “1 rundown” to “7 upgrading. In this way, Van Kerckhoven denounces the modernist commercialization and industrialization of the female nude. She does not portray women as victims, but rather as strong individuals who defy the production chain almost effortlessly.
