Caves and Intestines (2012)
MIXED TECHNIQUE
For Museum to Scale, Joris Van de Moortel created a new version of Caves and Intestines, a work he showed in 2009 during an intervention at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts. An enormous sound installation (600 x 300 x 120 cm) protruded there as a beam-shaped volume through a classroom window, where it seemed to float about a meter above the floor. Through some slits in the side wall and through the open underside, the viewer could see what was inside the dark interior of the structure. A tangle of cables, screens, projectors and speakers generated audiovisual stimuli in this “cave,” which engulfed the visitor like an indeterminate and chaotic noise. In Van de Moortel's reworking to scale, two puppets stand with their upper bodies in the interior space. Red and blue cables emerge from an abdominal cavity like “intestines. Boxes are mounted on the side wall to transmit the energy generated in the depths of the installation.
