Underground takes place that which shuns the light of day, that which is dark and alienating, sometimes exciting. The basement of the soul is above all the domain of the subconscious, of thoughts that do not reveal themselves or allow themselves to be known. Van Bossche translates this psychological reality into an anonymous, soberly painted landscape in which little seems to be happening. Nevertheless, the dynamics between below and above become thoroughly disturbed. In Underground Second Floor , a ditch or sewer is only partially covered. The underground and the uneasy inevitably rise to the surface and seemingly dissolve into it. In the opposite sense, the landscape is nothing more than a “superficial” manifestation of the underlying, a second floor of what takes place underground. The underground is inherent to the aboveground and helps determine the identity of the landscape.
