Untitled (2013)
4 PAINTINGS ON CANVAS
Long live painting! That cry of joy seems to emanate from the canvas with the blue, green and orange color scheme. Although Walter Swennen applauds plastic freedom in Untitled, there is more going on in this room. No doubt ambiguous is the large painting with the monochromatic black background on which Swennen - with the poetry of a naive painter - applies a figurative motif in yellow. What looks like a lovely monster from our collective imagination about the Loch Ness monster escapes definite meaning without additional information about the context or the artist's intention. What remains in this way is the almost absurd importance of painting itself. Swennen also sows confusion in the painting on the right. The poetic eloquence of the soft colors on a white background remains anyway, but are we looking at a full-fledged “oil on canvas” or at the color splendor of an objet trouvé, a piece of found wall?
