Voting Booth Museum (2013)

In addition to a Lederhosen Museum, a Bidet Museum and Bijl's Roman Street at the Middelheim Museum, among others, the Cultural Tourism series also includes a Voting Booth Museum (2000), an installation that has been part of the S.M.A.K. collection since 2008. In this adapted miniature version, Bijl set up four different voting booths, each equipped with a plate that - like animals in the zoo - indicates which country the specimen in question comes from (so to speak). The recognizable functionality of Bijl's trompe-l'oeils sometimes confuses onlookers, but in this case an inscription makes it clear that this is a museum exhibit. It is a form of performative language with which Bijl dissolves the boundary between fiction and reality.
