As with many of Sergio De Beukelaer's works, underlying The.Monochrome.Museum n°1 and n°2 is the idea of “color as readymade. Both installations consist of three rows of three colored spheres each reflecting the color of monochromatic color surfaces behind them. Whereas the French Zero-artist and monochromist Yves Klein (1928-1962) saw pure color perception - more specifically of ultramarine - as a new starting point for painting, De Beukelaer does not want to reduce painting to a layer of paint on a canvas. By using color as the subject and translating the color plane into a spherical shape, the pictorial literally takes on an extra dimension. In this way, De Beukelaar creates a universe of his own. The.Monochrome.Museum can be seen as a kind of institutional anchoring of this.
