Ignition (2013)
ASHES, 3 LAMPS AND BLACK BOX
In Ignition , Honoré d'O engages the viewer in a conceptual play with the spark that marks a moment of clear insight and lies at the root of creation. In his garden, he burned the viewing box he had received for his contribution to Museum to Scale 1/7. With the collected ashes, he filled three lamps, which he then connected one by one to a box, a scale model of the original museum room to scale. While the lamps and the black box evoke the moment when the light goes on, the whole also evokes the image of an ignition mechanism (and an explosive sequel). Only the spark needed to ignite everything seems to be missing. The artist's gesture allows associations in a variety of directions to converge. After all, the outcome of the ignition is already contained in the lamp that must initiate it. The viewer is invited to scale his experience and seek a formal and substantive starting or ending point from his perspective, the moment when he experiences the proverbial spark.
