Integration (2012)
6 PAINTINGS
In his monochromatic panels with chalk layers after Y2K, Willy De Sauter resolutely opts for the simplicity of matter. These works are the result of a sustained process of taking painting back to its foundations and arriving at a pure artistic experience. Integration shows how at this stage De Sauter works with panels of different sizes and thicknesses, each one intensively and craftily prepared with different layers of chalk. In a room with white plaster walls that otherwise lacks any stimulus, the works seem to merge into their surroundings. By presenting the panels not only vertically against the walls, but also horizontally - on a table or, as here, on the floor - the light falls on them differently each time. Thus, the viewer is invited to pay attention to the subtle nuances in their texture. In a serene space where integration is complete, the pared-down simplicity can be fully experienced.
