The Musée d'Art Moderne. Département des Aigles, Section XIXth siècle occupies an important place within Broodthaers' oeuvre. The museum opens in 1968 at Broodthaers' home in Rue de la Nurseries in Brussels and closes in 1972 during the fifth edition of Documenta in Kassel. The (fictional) Musée d'Art Moderne dissects the concepts linked to the museum, the art market and reproduction through elements that are not considered works of art. The project reads as a critique of the ideology of art and of art as ideology. With this work, Broodthaers establishes his fame as the clearest conceptual artist of his time.
