‘Br.’ refers to Brussels. Therefore, this museum room was conceived as a tribute to the Belgian artists who were part of the innovative Cobra art movement. The involvement of Pierre Alechinsky, Christian Dotremont, Reinhoud D’Haese and Raoul Ubac in the development of informal art in the 1950s and 1960s in Paris is proof of the pioneering role these Belgian Cobra artists played. Photographs, text fragments and other original Cobra ephemera were painted on the walls of their scaled museum room. Dotremont’s logograms and Alechinsky’s central painting are testimonies of their continuing fascination with calligraphy and their never-ending desire for a spontaneous form of artistic expression. The sculptures by Reinhoud D’Haese on the floor suggest an interest in Art Brut. Finally, the gestural nature of informal art is expressed in Ubac’s sculpture on the left wall.
