Overview (2011)

8 PAINTINGS

In her museum room to scale Cindy Wright reproduces eight paintings. Together they offer an overview of her work from 2006 to 2011. Whether she starts from a composition with bacon cubes (Baconcube 6, 2006), skulls (Collector’s item, 2010) or a fish in a too-small bowl (Nature morte, 2010), or from a photograph of a dead butterfly (Scattered, 2011) or a sleeping man, the vanitas motif almost always recurs. As with the original, large-format works, the many details merge at a distance, creating what appears at first glance to be an objectifying precision. On closer inspection, the artist’s hand becomes visible in the meticulous and expert reproduction of skin or the surface of a skull, or in the rendering of pig fat. Thus, attention is drawn to the pictorial while at the same time the viewer is invited to dwell on the subjective perception of reality and on the fragility and transiency depicted.
