After his studies, Stephan Vanfleteren worked as a freelance photographer for De Morgen from 1993 to 2009. In those early years, his tightly composed coverage contributed to the collective memory of many historic events. He reported for instance on the genocide in Rwanda and the Dutroux case. In addition, he maintained autonomous projects. Around the turn of the century, the artist took a growing interest in that which is in danger of disappearing. With melancholy and doggedness, Vanfleteren takes pictures of his homeland and compatriots, in search of an identity, ineffable and untraceable. He portrays ‘flandriens’, fishermen and common people, but he also captures famous people on film: from royals and film celebrities to footballers. Qualities of tranquillity and serenity have gradually crept into his work and become defining of his style in recent years. Vanfleteren was one of the founders of Kannibaal/Hannibal Publishers, where he also published several photo books.
