Benoît Van Innis

Belgian cartoonist and visual artist Benoît Van Innis graduated from Sint-Lucas in Ghent in 1984, where he was taught by Minimalist painter Dan Van Severen. As a cartoonist, Van Innis worked for Humo, Knack, De Morgen and De Standaard, but also, for the French ParisMatch and the well-known American satirical magazine The New Yorker. His illustrations are characterised by a linear and dryly humorous drawing style. His work is an oasis of humour, tranquillity and zest for life for the always busy Westerner. Van Innis himself says of his work that it is rarely ‘programmed’. For instance, he came to the conclusion that since he goes olive picking in Italy every year, olive picking should play a part in his work. And so it does. Van Innis has also worked with various architects over the past decades. His work can be seen, among others, in the Brussels metro station Maelbeek and the Wezenberg swimming pool in Antwerp.
