Rinus Van de Velde’s work routinely and imperturbably depicts a non-chronological, fictionalised autobiography. Underlying his charcoal drawings are found photographs and pictures of scenes he has reconstructed with collaborators. Van de Velde projects them mostly in large format and lets them loosely interfere with texts with no clear beginning or end that he applies around or amid his drawings. In each narrated scene, Van de Velde plays the role of protagonist. He rewrites, censors and transforms it, creating multiple narratives. Where documented reality and myth-forming fiction merge, Van de Velde searches with irony, reflection, imagination and sensitivity for the identity he can derive from an image as an artist. At the same time, he explores both the essence of the creative process and the mechanisms and conventions of the world of art.
