Helmut Stallaerts
(Brussels,
1982 )
In paintings, installations, photographs and films, Helmut Stallaerts depicts man in a theatrical and ominous environment. Stallaerts often includes himself in these depictions to create an existential, almost absurd tension. His stagings of human existence shun the anecdotal and alienate the viewer with their austere atmosphere. The artist evokes the mystery of being, thus exposing a dark truth that underpins our fictional truths. Since 2011, Stallaerts has been a lecturer at LUCA in Brussels and in 2013, he won the audience award of the Belgian Art Prize.
