Kurt Stallaert’s oeuvre plays with the boundary between free and applied photography. Stallaert worked for several international advertising agencies and gained name and fame in recent decades as a fashion and advertising photographer. He set up campaigns for brands such as Sisley, Nike and Marie Jo, and made iconic portraits of celebrities such as American rapper Jay Z. In his free work we often see an implicit, usually humorous critique of the social and cultural context in which he functions. Undoubtedly, Stallaert work questions man’s psychological well-being in Western consumer society.
