In performances, installations and animated assemblage sculptures, Johan Muyle conducts a critical, sometimes somewhat morbid, but often humorous investigation of individual and cultural identity. To do so, he uses objects found during trips, at flea markets or on the Internet. Each of them has a past and evokes diverse sociological, political and cultural connotations. By combining these seemingly contradictory elements in form and content, their meanings overlap and cultures become intermingled. Muyle portrays the complementarity of diversity and, on that basis, questions the condition humaine, current events and ideological issues. Between 1995 and 2004, Muyle lived in Africa and India, where he created monumental installations with paintings with local artists and artisans. Today he lives and works in Liege and Brussels, where he has led the sculpture class at La Cambre since 2006.
