Kris Martin
(Kortrijk,
1972 )
Kris Martin is often described as a conceptual artist, but that characterization does not do full justice to the artist's poetic, slow and contemplative approach. In photographs, drawings, performances, subversive interventions and in monumental and small sculptures, Martin reflects on the inevitable passing of time. His work does not shy away from confronting the existential questions of life and - with the necessary self-mockery - evokes thoughts about vanity and transience. By challenging existing systems and hierarchies with minimal interventions, Martin creates an opening for alternative ways of seeing or thinking. After exhibiting mostly abroad for the past two decades, he was given a first retrospective in his own country at S.M.A.K. in March 2020.
