Michel François
(Sint-Truiden,
1956 )
Michel François' conceptual oeuvre is constantly evolving. It takes shape in an intelligent, sustained dialogue between sculptures, videos, photographs, paintings, installations and prints. Following the Fluxus movement, François strives to merge art and everyday life. To this end, he creates his own “inventory of reality,” a collection of objects, materials, forms and movements from which he recycles elements and - in a working method akin to that of arte povera - transforms them with minimal interventions. François also recreates them in other forms and materials or assembles them into new wholes, and then brings them together in ever-changing constellations in exhibitions. Thus resonances arise within and between the works, evoking deeper meanings or reinforcing the existential or poetic potential of objects. François was selected by Jan Hoet in 1992 for Documenta IX. In 1999, together with Ann Veronica Janssens, he delivered the Belgian entry for the Venice Biennale.
