Filip Francis

(Duffel, 1944 - Antwerp, 2023 )

Filip Francis is a pioneer of conceptual art in Belgium. Francis was involved in the first happenings in Antwerp in the mid-1960s and carried out experiments with mail art, film and performance in the 1970s. Starting in 1975, he systematically questions the role of chance by imposing limitations on himself as a painter over and over again. Francis realizes abstract paintings with the left hand, with the right hand, with the left foot, with the mouth, in a drunken state or in a moving vehicle. In this way, he wants to make the viewer consider whether or not a work in which chance plays a role would be inferior. Francis' experiments fit within a broader investigation that leads the artist into the fundamentals of painting.
