Stijn Cole
(Ghent,
1978 )
Central to Stijn Cole's work is the relationship between an object, the viewer and space. Invariably, the basis is the artist's observation of a landscape. The specific context in which that observation takes place and the relationship to the factors of time and space would give Cole's series a documentary connotation, if he did not consciously manipulate and abstract his landscapes into a universal, conceptual essence. The record of perception becomes more schematic and determined by light from a longitudinal perspective, which determines how shapes and colors are perceived. Cole uses mixed media, videos, sculptures, installations, paintings, graphic work and photography, but form is always secondary to light. In recent work, he also often employs digital techniques to bring perspective to his investigations into the perception of light, the manipulation of colors into autonomous entities and the representation of a landscape over time. The artist lives and works in Chimay.
