Jean-Marie Bytebier paints with skimpy layers of paint on rough, unprepared linen, leaving parts of the canvas unpainted. From faint spots, the image appears. In this sense, Bytebier's painting is closely related to watercolor painting on paper, a technique popular with the nineteenth-century Romantics. Besides this technical similarity, there is also a thematic affinity: nature, cosmos and mystery are the basic ingredients for Bijtebier's neo-romantic painting. The artist does not draw so much from concrete reality and he does not use photographic material. On the contrary, he wants to translate his own wonder into tranquil dream images that are at once unreal and universal.
