Every work by Dirk Zoete is based on the artistic practice of drawing. From these drawings, he creates models, sculptures, architectural constructions, photographs, films and ... new drawings. In doing so, Zoete directs his imagination. He translates his thought models about the world and people into slightly absurd scenes that he presents on stages and in sets. Formally Zoete’s spaces and characters recall the revolutionary sets and costumes of German Bauhaus and Russian Constructivism. But Zoete’s conceptual universe has a more human, almost melancholic character. In 2017, Dirk Zoete received his first solo exhibition in a Belgian museum at the Ghent S.M.A.K.: To be Determined.
