From 1977 to 1981, Dirk Braeckman explored the artistic possibilities of photography and film at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. In 1982, together with Carl De Keyzer and others, he founded the Ghent Gallery XYZ with the ambition of putting Belgian photography on the international map. In his oeuvre, Braeckman cultivates the pictorial potential of the photographic process. His atmospheric black-and-white images exude a desolate desolation. Braeckman's unorthodox framing opens wide the gate to associations with film and painting. In 2005 he received the Flemish Culture Prize for Visual Arts and in 2017 he represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale.
